“When Alexander Liberman created this composition with two red and two black circles in 1959 he already had almost ten years of experimental circle studies behind him. The circle did in fact become a body created from color with its own resonant space for him. Liberman stopped scattering dots over large areas of canvas when circles, Pop-related things, circularity suddenly became very popular as taste began to change in the mid 1960s. So ultimately he had anticipated a collectively accepted aesthetic vocabulary that was also being widely used in fashion design. His credo of wishing to make an impact on perception structures and the basis of visual communication psychologically had worked out in great style. It is slightly tempting to ascribe the graphic signal quality and visual sensations of Liberman’s circle-choreography to his long years of experience as Art Director of ‘Vogue’. He was after all responsible for the look of the fashion magazine for some decades.”
